Commercial long-line fishing and gill net fishing destroy the environment and capture fish species that are not edible, so they’re thrown away without thought to the environmental impact on the fishing areas. Moreover, commercial fishing simply depletes the ocean of its fish as the human population rises every year.

Fish farms also provide a valuable service by preserving the wild fish population and by helping prevent excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. How can Salmon farming do this, you may ask?

Recent studies show that surface fish caught commercially rely on tiny organisms called Phytoplankton for food. These Phytoplankton make up the foundation of the food chain for almost all sea life. Most importantly, Phytoplankton absorb Carbon dioxide, and lots of it! Billions of tons of carbon dioxide every year are absorbed by phytoplankton, then eaten by surface fish and then eaten by larger fish that reside at deeper depths but come up to feed. Once the carbon dioxide is passed from smaller surface fish to these deeper sea fish, the carbon dioxide becomes trapped under the pressures of the deep ocean water unable to return to the atmosphere. Fish and other aquatic life in the ocean are vital as they absorb carbon dioxide to a great degree, with a carbon offset cost savings of $74 billion to $222 billion in climate change damage per year.

Global climate change scientists warn that over-fishing and other commercial activities will jeopardize the oceans’ ability to provide the planet with enough fish. As the wild fish population dwindles, so too will our unique natural eco system that eliminates high levels of carbon emissions.

“Fish are actually really important in the global carbon cycle, and they’ve been rather neglected,” said Clive Trueman of the University of Southampton, lead author of the deep-sea fish study.

“I really think to use our oceans sensibly, we need to look at all the services that they provide and then find those that contribute to human welfare and well-being the most, and try to encourage that,” added Rashid Sumaila, professor and director of the fisheries economics research unit at the University of British Columbia, who co-authored the Global Ocean Commission report.
By relieving wild fish populations that are otherwise weakened by commercial fishing, salmon farming does its part to preserve our amazing planet’s natural carbon storage bank: the wild fish population. Saving Wild Salmon

“Why should I buy farmed salmon?” It’s a question we get often and the answer is our “Why,” our core belief that sustainable aquaculture is the answer to saving wild salmon. By promoting sustainable ocean-based farming of Atlantic salmon and other fish species, we can ensure the health of our oceans and our fish populations for generations to come.

Conservation groups are working tirelessly to ensure strong legal protection is in place for threatened steelhead and West Coast salmon populations to protect fragile stream habitats. They have played a major role in setting up federally protected critical habitat and regulations to protect endangered salmon populations. Some of the regions affected include San Francisco Bay Delta, Klamath River, Sacramento River and other vital salmon streams. Efforts have also fought logging plans, gravel mining, overgrazing, use of pesticides and other activities that destroy stream habitat for salmon.

Many historically abundant Pacific salmon fisheries have collapsed, due to the construction of dams, pressure from logging, mining, pesticides, fertilizers, overgrazing, climate change and pesticides. Over 27 distinct Pacific salmon and steelhead regions are now federally protected as endangered or threatended.

Pacific salmon have long been a key element of the history of the Pacific Northwest and an intrinsic part of the settlers’ and native Indians’ diet and culture. Seven species of salmon as well as steelhead trout make the long and often terminally exhausting journey back to their original spawning grounds to end their life cycle. The cycle begins after hatching when fingerlings make their way from streams to rivers to feeding grounds in the Pacific ocean, then eventually returning to their natal stream beds to spawn. Their innate ability to relocate to the streams where they began life and the sheer size of the migration in spring is astounding. Salmon are now the subject of a restoration project involving entire ecosystems, watersheds and cultures.

What Does “Color Added” Mean on a Label for Atlantic Salmon?

Salmon fillet on plankWhat does “color added” mean on a label for farmed salmon and salmon products? Color added labels for farmed salmon do not mean that any dyes are added to feed or the salmon flesh when processed. When salmon are raised in ocean pens, they are fed a mixture of natural fish products and a feed that contains a pigment called astaxanthin. This pigment is pink and can be obtained naturally by harvesting krill from the Pacific and Antarctic Oceans as well as extracting it from shrimp shells. Using shrimp shells means that when shrimp are harvested and prepared for consumers, nothing goes to waste.

Just like feeding flamingos in the wild or in a zoo, when the salmon feed is digested, the astaxanthin is absorbed into the flamingos’ or fishes’ flesh, thus turning flamingo feathers pink and giving the salmon fillets a salmon color. Astaxanthin is a naturally-occurring pigment.It is also the reason shrimp and crabs turn an orange-red color when cooked. Wild salmon get astaxanthin through their diets, which consist of plankton and small fish.

When asthaxanthin is added to farmed salmon feed, the FDA requires the words “color added” on the labels.  Astaxanthin is added to farmed salmon feed as an added dietary supplement, necessary for growth and health of the fish. Aside from bringing color to a salmon’s flesh, it is a vital nutrient for the salmon and for humans. In salmon, astaxanthin is important for growth and survival as it acts as a powerful anti-oxidant that protects important fats in the flesh from degrading. It also supports the immune system and cell respiration. For humans, astaxanthin is commonly sold as a nutritional supplement in health food stores for its anti-inflammatory benefits.

Aside from harvesting krill and using shrimp shell waste to manufacture asthaxanthin, food scientists use a micro-algae as well as other sources to synthetically produce asthaxanthin for both salmon and human dietary supplements.
